A new campaign, backed by the ICL and several other organisations, aims to get the law changed, so that burglary tools such as bumpkeys, that have no legitimate uses to hobbiests or anyone other than professional locksmiths and the security forces, are restricted to those with a real need.

Bumpkeys are designed to open a specific brand of lock. Sadly, in the UK the standard rim cylinder and euro locks found on an estimated 65% of homes are all the same profile, meaning that, unless you have an upgraded, treated lock (and you won’t unless you have specifically obtained one from a locksmith) you are vulnerable. Even higher security locks, if made more than a few years ago, are generally vulnerable. Call or email us for more information.

Pickbuster launches Ban the Bump Key campaign

Pickbuster, the simple ‘pour in’ remedy against lock bumping introduced by UAP little more than 18 months ago that was the catalyst for the security industry to finally introduce bump-proof lock cylinders, is launching a 'Ban the Bump Key' campaign.

UAP’s Pickbuster Technical Representative, Chris Pankhurst, explains the reasoning behind the move:

"During conversations with locksmiths, police forces, local authorities and many other organisations, it became clear that the best way to stop lock bumping is at the source of the problem. Not just at the lock.

“It was therefore obvious to us that the way to do this was to get everyone behind a campaign to stop easy access to bump keys and other specialist locksmith tools.

“In our opinion, web sites and retail outlets that offer bump keys, lock breakers and lock picks for sale to just anyone should be shut down. This type of equipment should only be available to recognised locksmiths and security professionals. If this equipment is restricted, then the incidence of 'walk-in crime' will be much reduced and the UK will become a much safer place to live.

“Added to this, the campaign will highlight the other known common risks to home security and the easy and cost-effective means to safeguard against those risks.

“At present we are talking to many individuals and organisations about backing this campaign, and we hope to announce a major celebrity endorsement in the next few days.

The www.banthebumpkey.co.uk and www.banthebumpkey.com websites are now up and running and we are asking consumers, politicians and any interested party to sign the ban the bump key petition.

UAP’s Managing Director David Jennings commented:

“We fully acknowledge that once the threat of lock bumping has been removed, Pickbuster may no longer have a place in the market. But by then Pickbuster would have done its job of protecting the public, and at that stage UAP will be satisfied to withdraw the product from sale. Until that day, Pickbuster offers the only cost effective retro-upgrade solution to lock bumping.”
